While not a bike, one of my favorite cars is the Porsche 911. The model has been around for 50 years and while technology has made it more modern and faster, the shape and essence of the car has stayed the same – 2+2 seater, with the engine hanging out over the rear wheels, power coming from a flat-6 cylinder engine.
While this is all true the current Porsche 911 is so technology layered that it is very far from the true Porsche 911 of old. And now the older Porsche 911 – the air-cooled cars – are deemed collectibles and their prices have jumped accordingly.
The sweet spot seems to the be the Porsche 997. Built between 2005-2012, these cars captured the spirit of the last air-cooled Porsche 911 – the Porsche 993 – but brings the modern technology to the mix. But not too much technology, the Porsche 997 still carried hydraulic steering, less electronic dampers and pure driving excitement.
